In this scene from the film Sister played by Lonette McKee performs the song, “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” with lyrics that amply tell the story of the fate that will befall this character during the film. Levi’s desire to please the beautiful Sister leads to his being imprisoned for a drug deal gone array. Three sisters form a singing group in 1950s Harlem, but success threatens to ruin their relationship forever. Levi, played by Dorian Harewood, is Sister’s boyfriend has started to run drugs for a menacing drug dealer named Satin, played by Tony King. With Philip Michael Thomas, Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, Dwan Smith. Stix also has blossoming affections for Sparkle. While Stix, played by Philip Michael Thomas, is consumed with the potential of the singing group there are other dark forces at work that are obstructing his dreams. In this scene the blended group wins a talent contest and they are all starry-eyed with the presumed success that lies ahead. Sister is the lead singer of what starts out as a teen group with two male and three female singers and ends up being just a girl group. Sparkle, played by Irene Cara, is the youngest of the three siblings and she idolizes her sister who everyone affectionately calls “Sister”. The dialogue throughout the film invokes the struggle of growing up poor on the streets of Harlem and always hoping for and longing for a chance to break free of the burden of ghetto life. Sparkle is a 1976 American musical drama film directed by Sam O'Steen and released by Warner Bros. This was a very accurate depiction because this is the typical roots of most African-American singers and musicians. The movie opens in a church where all of the characters in the film are singing in a church choir. The film is classified in the genres of Drama and Music and this is certainly what this film delivers on. Curtis Mayfield’s songs are what made this film so timeless and relatable especially to African-American audiences.
